ICJ Norway is seriously concerned for human rights defender Maytham Al-Salman’s situation, after Bahraini authorities’ repeated arrests and the interrogation of him yesterday. As we understand, the arrest of him now is based solely on his public criticism of a new law adopted by the Kingdom of Bahrain, which stipulates that women under the age of 45 years old must have a male guardian to go for the Hadj (the pilgrimage to Mecca).
On August 8th, he was arrested at Manama airport, upon returning to Bahrain after attending a UN conference, and charged with ‘inciting hatred against the system of government’ and ‘disseminating false news’

. He was released, but was summoned for interrogations yesterday and will face the prosecution today, Monday August 15th.
In today’s letter to Bahrain’s authorities ICJ Norway calls on them to drop charges against human rights defender Maytham Al-Salman for exercising his right to freedom of expression.
